The Sower, the Heart and the Harvest

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.
Luke 8:11-15 NKJV

The scripture above reveals the state of four hearts: one that is utterly disconnected from the Lord (the wayside), two that struggle to bring forth fruit despite effort (among the rocks and thorns), and one that bears fruit—the good ground.

The good ground is an honest and noble heart toward God. It is planted in and rooted in the ways of God with no falsehood, pretense, self-centeredness, or selfishness. As we conclude the month of November, let us make sure our hearts are good ground. Remove the little foxes, the divided heart, and double-mindedness.

What quality of heart is God looking for? A good heart, an honest heart, a God-fearing heart, a loving heart, and a humble heart. This is the state of heart we should all seek to end the year with.
